I started the Practical Ed Tech weekly newsletter ten years ago this month. It was an off-shoot of the daily FreeTech4Teachers.com posts that started in 2007. Over that time I’ve answered a lot (well into the thousands) questions from readers. But there is one question that comes up more than any other every year.
Every year the most frequently asked question is, “what are you using to make your videos?” For the majority of those years the answer was Screencast-o-Matic. Last year Screencast-o-matic changed its name to ScreenPal. I still use it to make the vast majority of the videos appearing on my YouTube channel. Here’s a short video overview of how Screenpal works.
ScreenPal is available in free and paid versions. The free version provides enough features for teachers who are only making a few videos in a month. If you’re making more videos than that, you’ll probably want to upgrade or take a look at some other options.
Windows 11 users have a free screencasting tool at their disposal. The snipping tool built into Windows 11 now includes a screencasting option. Here’s a quick overview of how it works.
Mac users, QuickTime still offers a built-in screencasting tool. It doesn’t offer much in the way of editing, but you can import your recording into iMovie to do all of the editing you could ever need for a screencast video.
